The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remains a milestone game more than five years after its initial release. And since it doesn’t look like we’re getting another entry in Bethesda’s RPG series for a while longer (no, Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t count), even the most dedicated Skyrim player might be looking for ways to get some new life out of the original game.
Fortunately, modders have been making vanilla Skyrim better since the game came out. And we’re not just talking about improving the graphics, either (though graphics mods are awesome). At this point, there are mods that add new characters, questlines, enemies, spells, and even new areas to explore. If Skyrim was starting to feel a little dull after five years, these mods will make it feel fresh again.
What You’ll Need
This guide is for the original PC version of Skyrim, not the Special Edition. The original game has the best selection of mods. Some might be available for the Special Edition too (and a few are also on the Xbox One and PS4 versions), but the original PC game is still the way to go if you want to customize your experience.
RELATED:How to Install Skyrim and Fallout 4 Mods with Nexus Mod Manager
In addition, some of the more advanced mods can’t be found on the Steam Workshop, which is the de facto repository (and the easiest to use for beginners). For more complex fare, you’ll want to upgrade to the third-party Nexus Mod Manager, which we’ve shown you how to use here. You might want to start with Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE), a prerequisite for many advanced game mods. Lots of them need the Mod Configuration Menu as well.
A Better User Interface
The user interface in Skyrim is designed to be usable with both a mouse and keyboard and a standard console controller. Regrettably, that means it’s not particularly good at either of them, including a lot of tedious scrolling and no real options for organization. Enter SkyUI, the overhauled custom user interface. With this installed you can search your inventory by text, organize items by weight when you’re over encumbered, colored icons for item types, and integration across all shop and lootable menus, too.
New Followers
The follower system is a staple of Bethesda RPGs. But most of the companions you can recruit in Skyrim are either fairly limited characters designed to be battle companions, or tied to specific quests and unavailable for the longer game. There are a wide variety of add-on followers available as game mods that insert new characters specifically designed to be interesting or useful. Some of the best examples include custom-recorded voice lines from the community, full backstories and quests that flesh out the character, and unique equipment to make them stand out from the polygonal crowd. Inigo the good-natured Khajit wanderer and Vilja the generational warrior are good places to start.
Better Dragons
The massive dragon battles in Skyrim differentiate it from the rest of The Elder Scrolls, and they were a huge selling point before the game’s release. But after a few dozen hours, dragons cease to be any particular challenge, and there are only a handful of different types. To add some spice to Tamriel’s skies, try the Diverse Dragons Collection, an omnibus mod that combines custom dragons from a bunch of different creators. These souped-up beasts come with custom attacks and creature models, special effects, and lots of combat modifiers that can make them a real challenge. Speaking of which, if all you want is more epic dragon fights, you can try Deadly Dragons (which can be combined with Diverse Dragons Collection). If you want even more motivation to become a legendary dragon slayer, try a “souls for perks” mod, which lets you trade a leveled amount of dragon souls for skill improvements instead of the standard dragon shouts.
More Magic and Tougher Combat
Skyrim’s magic and combat aren’t its best features—games like Dark Souls and Shadow of Mordor have it beaten dead to rights when it comes to the sheer mechanical joy of fighting. Modders, thankfully, have expanded both of these areas. Duel makes combat more deadly, making it more important to dodge attacks and find the right time to strike rather than simply tanking or blocking all damage. You’ll have to use actual tactics in each and every fight… something most Skyrim players probably haven’t done since they maxed out their Smithing score. There’s not much that can be done for Skyrim’s magic system except expand the spells and effects, but several mods do that to a spectacular degree, including Midas Magic Evolved and Apocalypse Magic.
Explore New Lands
Easily the most ambitious Skyrim mods are the ones that add entirely new areas to the game, or transform existing ones with a ton of new content. Falskaar is surely the biggest of the big, adding a whole new island to the land of Skyrim brimming with new characters, new quests, and a new storyline to follow. It’s full of dozens of custom voiced characters, new equipment, spells, and books, and even custom-made music. There’s also Enderal: The Shards of Order, a total conversion that essentially creates an original fantasy RPG using Skyrim as its backbone. With a completely customized continent and dozens of hours’ worth of quests and gameplay, you can think of this as a community-made companion game (that just happens to be free). A few other examples include Moonpath to Elsewyr, The Forgotten City, and The Cyrodiil Frontier.
…Or Just Change the Wallpaper
There are innumerable mods out there that are made and installed just for fun, like the one that replaces dragons with Thomas the Tank Engine or adds a custom “IKEA-born” race. But for a bit of fun that doesn’t actually change Skyrim‘s core gameplay, I recommend Uncle Sheogorath’s custom loading screens. This mod replaces the flavor text that appears whenever you go to a new area with sarcastic and goofy alternative descriptions. It’s a great way to get a quick chuckle without messing up the balance of the rest of the game.

Step by Step How to guide to using the Skyrim Creation kit to create mods for beginners
Hi and welcome to my first hub on the Skyrim Creation Kit. This is the tool that Bethesda used to create the game and is also used by all the modders who make all the wonderful mods that we all love to use. Mods add so much to the existing game and allow us to explore new lands, wear new clothing, and wield new weapons among many other things. They also fix bugs and enhance or overhaul every aspect of the game.
I have just recently taken up modding in Skyrim and thought I would share my experiences beginner to beginner. There are many excellent guides out there, but they are written by experts and people who are very familiar with the tool and have forgotten what it is like to be unfamiliar with the tool. I will begin at the very start with:
How to install the Skyrim Creation Kit
The first step is to install the Creation kit itself.
Steam will download the Creation Kit and add a short cut to it on your desktop. You are now ready to launch it and start learning how to create mods of your own.
Introduction to the Skyrim Creation Kit
Now that we have the Creation Kit, open it and you will see the following:
As you can see, it is made up of a number of separate windows called views.
The basics of creating a simple Skyrim mod using the Creation Kit
Now that you have a rudimentary understanding of what all the views do, it is time to start creating your first mod. To begin:
If you have already created a mod, the process will be slightly different
The Creation Kit will now load the Skyrim.esm file. This may take some time, depending on your system’s speed. You will get a warning, click Yes to all to suppress it.
Now, the Creation kit has loaded all the objects from the main Skyrim.esm file. We are now going to add an object so that we can practise movement and manipulation of objects in the render window. Before we do that, we need to create our own cells for our mod. To do this:
Note:you will have to click on another cell and back onto your new cell to see the changes
Now that we have an empty cell, it is time to add a new object to it.
Double click on your new cell so that the Creation Kit knows this is where you want the objects to be placed
How to move about in the Render Window in the Skyrim Creation Kit
The first thing you will need to learn is how to move around in the Render Window. The controls chosen by Bethesda are different to most anything you have used before and will take a while to get used to. I suggest practising moving around until you are used to it before building your first mod. This will save you a lot of annoyance later on. To move around the Render Window:
Space above and beyond saratoga. Once you are totally happy, it is time to move to the next step, adding more objects into the cell that makes up your mod
How to add objects to your mod’s cell in the Skyrim Creation Kit
Now that we are happy moving around in the Render Window, it is time to add additional objects to your mod. Before we do this, we need to select two buttons to make connecting the objects together easier. On the Creation Kit, select the two buttons shown to the right, the Snap to Grid and Snap to Angle buttons.
One final suggestion which saves a lot of time when you are new to the Creation Kit is to use the Preview ObjectWindow. To turn this on, go to View and select Preview Window. This will allow you to see what an object looks like without having to drag it into the Render Window and then deciding you don’t like it or it is the wrong piece.
Now, we come to adding objects into the cell. This is one of the trickiest parts to learn and it took me quite a while to get to the point where I was able to do this quickly and easily. There are in fact two ways to do it, which you choose is up to personal preference. First, I will illustrate the frustration that this can cause. Drag NorRmSmWallFront01 into the Render Window. Now, drag and drop a second one into the window. You can see how this will look below.
The two walls are in totally different positions. You could move the pieces so that they are together, but believe me that is frustrating and very time consuming. So my advice to you is to never add objects like this it will drive you crazy and you will waste a lot of time and energy lining things up. The first way to add objects so that they are lined up is:
Should you want a different object to the first (for example a Corner piece) select the duplicate and press Control F. This will allow you to replace the object with another. Go ahead and make your third wall piece NorRmSmCorIn01.
Add another corner so that you have two wall pieces and two corners like this.
Now, we can duplicate this whole wall to make the other wall of the room. To do this, drag a box around it by holding down the left mouse button. You will see the selection boxes (the blue, green and red lines) displayed for all four pieces.
Press Control D to duplicate them and drag them off to the left. Rotate them so that they look like mine below.
Now add two side walls (NorRmSmWallSide01), one to either end using the same method as we did above. Now select the four pieces we created before (either drag a box around them or press Control and select them to create our group once more)
To fill the room up, add two NorRmSmMid01 (floor tiles)
Now that we have created a basic room, it is time to save it and play test it.
Once Skyrim is open
Coc stands for centre on cell in case you were curious! Now we have created our first mod, go ahead and wander around your new room, checking for any seams or graphical glitches that you will need to fix. Once you are happy with your room quit Skyrim and enjoy having finished your very first simple mod!
Conclusion
In this hub, I have covered the very basics of using the Skyrim Creation Kit. As a learner myself, I found that the videos and tutorials I was following skipped too quickly past the very basics. There are a number of small hurdles you need to get over to be able to efficiently use and enjoy the kit. These are:
Once we have a familiarity with both of these concepts, we looked at the various windows that make up the Creation Kit:
The Creation Kit itself, with the menus and buttons you will need to use to create mods
Finally, we created a small Nordic room and tested it in game to ensure that we had created a perfectly formed room. I hope that you enjoyed this hub and it has helped you to better understand the Creation Kit. It is a very powerful tool, if you look at Skyrim Nexus Mods and check out some of the wonderful mods created using it, you can see just how far this tool can take you. I have a hub on getting the most out of this website which can be found here:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a fantastic game right out of the box, but the reason so many people still play it so many years after its initial release is the massive modding community. Skyrim mods can do almost anything, from drastically improving the graphics, to creating new quests and non-player characters (NPCs), to something as simple as making the maps more attractive.
ModdingSkyrim and Skyrim: Special Edition isn't too difficult, but it can be a somewhat confusing process. Since there are two different versions of the game, and Skyrim is available on so many platforms, there are multiple different ways to find and install Skyrim mods.
What Version of Skyrim Do You Have?
There are two versions of Skyrim, and the game is also available on a number of different platforms. Both versions can be modded, but the only platforms that are compatible with mods are PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Steam.
The version of the game, and the platform you are using, will affect the process you need to go through if you want to mod your game.
Here are the main sources of mods for Skyrim and the platforms that you can use with them:
Here are the three main sources of mods for Skyrim: Special Edition and the platforms that you can use with them:
Mods are not compatible with the PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Switch versions of Skyrim.
How to Install Skyrim: Special Edition Mods for PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Skyrim: Special Edition is a version of Skyrim that is available for PC and consoles, and it is designed to make the modding process very easy. In fact, Bethesda actually hosts a huge variety of mods on their own site, and you don't need to download any additional software to use them.
The first part of this process is to create an account on Bethesda.net and locate some mods that you are interested in. Here are the steps that you need to take:
Once you have found some Skyrim: Special Edition mods that you want to install, the rest of the process takes place in the game. You will need to tie your accounts together, choose some of the mods you found, and install them.
The next step in modding Skyrim: Special Edition is to connect your Xbox Live, PlayStation Network (PSN), or Steam account to your Bethesda.net account and install your mods:
Some mods do not work well with other mods. If your game does not operate normally, try adjusting the load order by selecting Load Order from the main mods screen. If that doesn't work, you may need to disable one or more mods by clicking on the mod and then clicking on Disable.
Understanding Skyrim: Special Edition Mod Limits
Depending on your platform, there may be limits on how many mods you can download and install. The number of mods you can install will also be lower if you don't have enough free space on your console.
Here are the limits you might run up against:
The space limitations are placed by Microsoft and Sony, while the limit on the number of mods you can install can be placed by either the console manufacturer or Bethesda.
The limitation on the number of mods can change from time to time if Bethesda decides that Skyrim is capable of handling more, or less, mods while still remaining stable.
How to Install Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition Mods on PC Using Nexus Mods
The easiest way to find and install mods for the original version of Skyrim on PC is a program called Nexus Mod Manager, which has an associated website. This program is also compatible with Skyrim: Special Edition and many other games. Modders upload their work to the website, where users are able to search for interesting mods, download them, and then install them using the Nexus Mod Manager program
Before you can use Nexus Mod Manager, you need to create an account on the Nexus Mods site. Account creation is free, although there are limits placed on free accounts. For instance, download speed is capped if you don't pay for a premium account.
All of the Skyrim mods on the Nexus Mods site are free, and you are not required to pay any money or provide any billing information during the registration process.
The first step is to download and install the Nexus Mod Manager:
After you install Nexus Mod Manager, you need to dig in and find some mods for it to manage. This is done through the same Nexus Mod site where you made an account and downloaded the manager software.
The next step is to locate and download Skyrim mods from the Nexus Mods site, and use Nexus Mod Manager to install them:
You can download and install as many mods as you want with Nexus Mod Manager. In fact, it's literally possible to run hundreds of Skyrim mods at the same time. However, adding too many mods can slow the game down, and some mods don't work well with each other.
If you find that your game doesn't run well, or that it doesn't launch at all, use Nexus Mod Manager to change the load order of your mods. In some cases, changing the load order will make them work well together or run more optimally.
If that doesn't work, then the next step is to use Nexus Mod Manager to disable mods until your game starts working again.
How to Install Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition Mods on PC Using Steam Workshop
Steam is a service that allows you to purchase games, download mods, and play online with your friends. If you own either Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition on Steam, then the absolute easiest way to install mods is to go right through Steam's own workshop.
Owners of the Steam versions of Skyrim can use mods from both Nexus Mods and Steam Workshop, and owners of the Steam version of Skyrim: Special Edition can use mods from Nexus Mods, Bethesda.net, and Steam Workshop. Using mods from multiple sources works fine in some cases, but you may experience undesired effects.
Here are the steps you need to take to install mods for Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition via the Steam Workshop:
Skyrim How To Get Mods On Xbox One
You may need to close Skyrim and launch it again to successfully install your mods. Some Steam Workshop mods and mods from other sources may not work well together.
